dc.description	The airway is crucial for normal craniofacial development, and optimal respiratory function should be through the nose, with the lips closed to ensure adequate muscle function. Maxillary and mandibular micrognathia may predispose to airway obstructions and cause morphological alterations, such as maxillary transverse deficiency, which is associated with crossbites. These conditions affect both function and aesthetics of the patient, being more prevalent in men and with greater airway collapse during sleep. Orthodontists can identify airway abnormalities using lateral cephalometry, which allows assessment of airway caliber and patient posture. Maxillary disjunction is presented as an effective treatment to address transverse deficiency, as research indicates improvements in breathing after expansion.	es_ES
dc.description.abstract	La vía aérea es crucial para el desarrollo craneofacial normal, y su función respiratoria óptima debe realizarse a través de la nariz, con los labios cerrados para asegurar un adecuado funcionamiento muscular. El micrognatismo maxilar y mandibular puede predisponer a obstrucciones respiratorias y provocar alteraciones morfológicas, como la deficiencia transversal del maxilar, que se asocia con mordidas cruzadas. Estas condiciones afectan tanto la función como la estética del paciente, siendo más prevalentes en hombres y con un mayor colapso de la vía aérea durante el sueño. Los ortodoncistas pueden identificar anomalías en la vía aérea utilizando la cefalometría lateral, que permite evaluar el calibre de la vía aérea y la postura del paciente. La disyunción del maxilar se presenta como un tratamiento eficaz para abordar la deficiencia transversal, ya que investigaciones indican mejoras en la respiración tras la expansión.	es_ES
