dc.description The Mexican longline tuna fishery in the Gulf of Mexico is an important activity since the tunas caught in contrast to those obtained by the purse seine fishery are freely exported, so this activity represents an important source of foreign currency as it is destined for the market of United States in its fresh product presentation. Likewise and as a consequence, this activity promotes regional development by generating direct and indirect jobs. The first steps for the start of this fishery were in 1993, reaching a maximum of 2.07 million hooks in 2006, which progressively decreased to 1.81 million in 2008. The fishery is targeted at yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares; however, due to the characteristics of the fishing system, the catch is multispecific, so that other species classified as bycatch are obtained. es_ES
dc.description.abstract La pesquería palangrera mexicana de atún del Golfo de México es una actividad importante ya que los atunes capturados en contraste con los obtenidos por la pesquería de cerco se exportan libremente, así que esta actividad representa una importante fuente de divisas al tener como destino el mercado de Estados Unidos en su presentación de producto fresco. Igualmente y como consecuencia, esta actividad promueve el desarrollo regional al generar empleos directos e indirectos. Las primeras gestiones para el inicio de esta pesquería fueron en 1993, llegando a aplicar un máximo de 2.07 millones de anzuelos en 2006, que fue disminuyendo progresivamente hasta 1.81 millones en 2008. La pesquería está dirigida al atún aleta amarilla Thunnus albacares; sin embargo, debido a las características del sistema de pesca la captura es multiespecifica, de modo que se obtienen otras especies clasificadas como captura incidental. es_ES
